BlockChalk lets you leave geo-tagged notes for the neighborhood

Fostering a sense of local community in the age of Internet and globalization is no easy task.

A new venture called BlockChalk from the former product lead of del.ici.ous Stephen Hood and Dave Baggeroer of Stanford’s Institute of Design, is trying to tackle that problem. BlockChalk is a service that lets people leave messages for others in the neighborhood without compromising their privacy. You can leave opinions about local businesses, set up deals with other neighbors or even report a lost cat. Hood says it’s already in 10,000 neighborhoods and 6,600 cities.

Today they’ve launched an iPhone app so you can keep track of short notes or the latest “chalks” in your neighborhood. The company already has a HTML5 web app that works with the iPhone and Android-based phones and an app for the Palm Pre and Pixi.

The criticism that the pair have for existing location-based services is that they work for early adopters who have lower expectations of privacy, but they may not be so readily accepted by consumers that are more guarded. Anonymity, of course, raises other issues. How do you seed a social networking service without real or tangible relationships built-in? How can people be engaged if there’s no context for the others they’re interacting with? That said, there are anonymous community sites that have thrived like Craigslist.

We’ve seen other attempts at building information services for local communities. EveryBlock, which was acquired by MSNBC, just launched a ‘Notify Your Neighbors’ function yesterday to let regular people share updates about what’s happening on their block. ‘Neighborhoods’ was another early Facebook application launched in 2007 that had an intriguing concept because it was tied to real identities and places through the social network. But it only has a little over 8,000 monthly active users. Then, of course, there’s the grand-daddy of them all, Craigslist, which does have a mobile web site.

The pair say they’re looking for seed funding for the project.

Graphic.ly launches a slick way to read digital comics

Like many of you reading this post, more and more of my media consumption is moving online, where I get most of my news, movies, music, television, and even some of my books. One of the last areas where I’m holding onto the physical object is comic books — but a startup called Graphic.ly may change that.

I’ve tried reading comic books as images files, as PDF documents, and as iPhone apps, but none of them combined good image quality with a smooth reading experience. (The less said about the ungodly hybrid known as “motion comics,” the better.)

But Boulder, Colo.-based Graphic.ly says it has created a slick comics app, as a native application for Windows 7, as a cross-computer app using Adobe AIR, and as an iPhone app. In addition to comics reading, Graphic.ly offers social features and a digital comics store, and it plans to include DVD-style extras too — like the ability to see individual art layers (the pencil drawings without ink or color, for example) or comments from creators.

Now, I haven’t had a chance to try the app out myself, but I’m hopeful after my conversations with co-founders Micah Baldwin and Kevin Mann. They’re knowledgeable comics fans and have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about the reading experience. Microsoft must have been impressed too, because Graphic.ly was demonstrated on-stage (very) briefly during Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer’s keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Showing off Windows 7’s touchscreen capabilities, the demonstrator smoothly swiped between different comics pages.

Graphic.ly is rolling out a very early Windows 7 version of its app, first to members of comic site iFanboy in a couple days, then to the general public two weeks later. Baldwin says he’ll be incorporating a lot of fan feedback. In fact, if Graphic.ly decides to incorporate your suggestion, the company will invite you to sit in on the relevant engineering meetings.

Graphic.ly was incubated by TechStars, and just raised $1.2 million led by DFJ Mercury, with participation from Starz Media and individual investors David Cohen, Chris Sacca, Jack Nickell, Paige Craig, and Dave McClure. It’s also part of Microsoft’s BizSpark One program, which provides startups with free software and other resources — including on-stage demos at CES, if you’re really lucky.
